Dubbed the most 'depressing day of the year' is the third Monday of January, or as it's more commonly known as, Blue Monday. The concept was conceived in 2004 by the psychologist, Cliff Arnall, when he was asked to come up with a formula as to when the best time to book a summer holiday would be by the travel firm Sky Travel. The travel firm subsequently used the phrase 'Blue Monday' in their winter deals promotions and since has become a common phrase amongst people.
The formula Arnall used took into account many factors including: weather, debt, time since Christmas, time since failing New Year's resolutions, low motivational levels and the feeling of a need to take action. The psychologist has however since confessed that the formula is essentially pseudoscience and has urged the UK to debunk the whole notion of Blue Monday.
