How to Grow Your Following on Twitter: Part 2

There has been a recent trend in our articles, all to do with growing your followers and increasing engagement on your business’ social media platforms. Social media is a powerful tool, and its popularity is only rising year on year as the digital marketing world grows! In (very generalised) terms of the social media demographic, whilst Facebook has a large user base of over 30s, and Instagram has a large user base of under 30s, Twitter is one of those universal platforms that is used by all ages. We’re jumping into part two of how to grow your following on Twitter.

Tweet the right content

Firstly, you need to be tweeting regularly – research has supported the fact that the more you tweet, the more followers you’re likely to have. In fact, Mashable’s study analysing the profiles of 36 million Twitter users showed a direct correlation between a users’ follower base and the amount they tweet. They say:

“A Twitter user who has written 1 to 1000 tweets has an average of 51 to 100 followers, whereas users who have tweeted more than 10,000 times tend to be followed by 1,001 to 5000 individuals. It's estimated that a person with more than 15,000 tweets has between 100,001 to 1 million followers.”

You also need to be tweeting the right content. Stay on trend by researching which topics are popular on Twitter but also relate to your field. Use Twitter’s trending page and try to find an appropriate way to join a trending conversation. Take advantage of any trends and news that are related to your business and in this way, you’ll be able to increase the number of people who will see your tweets to ultimately gain followers.

Cross-promote your Twitter account

You’re likely to have a website, perhaps a blog, and an email system, so why not utilise them to build your Twitter following? Include your Twitter username with a clickable link on your website – pair this with a call-to-action for best results. You could also let your email subscribers know about your Twitter account – hopefully, if they are interested in receiving your emails, if they are an active Twitter user they should also be interested in seeing your tweets. If you are talking about Twitter in your blog post, ask followers to follow you on Twitter!
