When Should You Start Thinking About Christmas Marketing

How Early Is Too Early When It Comes To Marketing For Christmas?

Christmas may be the most wonderful time of the year but when is the right time to start marketing for the big occasion?

Some say it's never too early for Christmas, others are offended when they see red and green adorning television screens before Halloween. Bain & Company released poll results about American's feelings toward advertising Christmas in September and found that two-thirds of those surveyed reported few, if any, negative feelings about it.

Christmas Advertising From The Top UK Retailers

Firstly, let's take a look at some of the UK's major supermarkets. Last year, ASDA launched their Christmas advert two months before the big day after research showed that 1 in 5 people had completed their Christmas shopping by the beginning of November! Sainsbury's wait until after Armistice Day (11th November) due to their partnership with the Royal British Legion but after that, it's masses of twinkling lights and sparkling tinsel.

Some supermarkets are claiming that they are just following consumers with the early release of their adverts. Marc Bolland, CEO at Marks & Spencers says that "people come home from their summer holidays and they say "what's next?", and the next big thing is Christmas. This suggests that consumers are wanting to see these early adverts to start their Christmas preparations early.

Of course, the highly anticipated annual release of the John Lewis advert is a good indicator as to when you should start jumping on the Christmas bandwagon, which is usually the first week of November.
