On this date, the Romans would offer sacrifices to Janus and make promises of good behaviour for the year ahead.

And it doesn't end there: New Year's resolutions can also be dated back to the Middle Ages, when Knights would renew their vow to chivalry. This celebration - known as the 'Peacock Vow' as Knights would place their hands on a live or roasted peacock - took place at the end of the year, resolving to continue their knighthood values into the new year.

  • In at number one with 47% of people choosing it as their top goal is to increase exercise and improve fitness.
  • Secondly, 44% of Brits set losing weight as their new year goal.
  • In third place is to improve diet, with 41% of the people making New Year's resolutions aiming for this.
  • Then, 31% of Brits say they are aiming to save more money.
  • Lastly, 18% of people are choosing to take up a new hobby.
