Pancake Day is yet another great promotional opportunity, where companies can hand out promotional gifts and giveaways that clients and prospective customers will keep and use about their home whilst keeping the companies brand, message, logo, company name etc in constant view. Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is traditionally the last day one gets to indulge before the period Christians call Lent.
Lent is all about giving up things such as fat, butter, and eggs... hence why Pancakes are eaten the day before, so all these things can be used up before Lent. You may have noticed that Pancake Day doesn’t fall on the same day each year, this is because Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year.
For example, Pancake Day fell on:
- 17th February in 2015
- 9th February in 2016
- 28th February in 2017
- 13th February in 2018
- 5th March 2019
And in 2020 it will fall on 25th February.
How Pancakes Are Commonly Enjoyed In The UK
Pancakes themselves are a versatile meal builder and there are many different types of pancakes to choose from. Virtually every country in the world has its own version of the traditional pancake and out of all the variations, it seems the only thing they have in common is the frying pan.
Pancakes are usually made with flour, eggs, milk, and butter but it's the filling or topping usually has cultural differences. In the UK the traditional topping for pancakes is usually syrup, whipped cream, lemon, sugar or a mixture of all four. Whereas the healthier option is usually fruit or yoghurt. Just about anything goes when it comes to topping your pancake, other popular toppings include cheese, meat, ice cream, peanut butter, butter, jam, chocolate and nuts.
Pancakes can be eaten for breakfast, as a main meal or for dessert. Usually, for breakfast pancakes are topped with fruit or yoghurt, if you're having them as a main meal then they are usually topped or filled with cheese, meats or potatoes. Then of course for dessert the topping of ice cream, chocolate or whipped cream is usually preferred.
How To Make The Best Pancakes
When making pancakes there are four main ingredients:
- Eggs
- Milk
- Plain flour
- Sugar
The amount of each ingredient you'll need all depends on the number of pancakes you're making. Tips on how to make the best pancake batter:
- Whisk the eggs in a measuring jug.
- Add the milk to the measuring jug, and whisk the mixture.
- Then add the flour, but not all a once! Whisk well each time you add the flour to make a smooth batter. Tip: The batter should have the consistency of single cream (you can add more milk or flour until it looks right).
- When cooking: Add a few drops of oil to the pan (to stop the pancake from sticking). Then wait for the pan to become hot before adding the mixture.
- Pour your batter into the pan (the more you poor the thicker the pancake will be).
- Then once one side is cooked flip the pancake over so the other side can cook (it doesn't usually take long for one side to cook, so keep checking it).
You'll know when the pancake is cooked as it'll be golden with brown speckles on both sides. Once the pancake is cooked, place it on a plate and cover with your favourite topping.
